Self-Mastery - Positive Impact - Leadership in Action

We believe that all students can cultivate a leadership mindset, develop leadership skills, and be leaders.  Leadership development fosters universal, transferable skills that will benefit students in the long run.

During the fall semester, students meet daily with the Director of Leadership Studies as a class to study communication, ethics, and the philosophy of leadership.  They also hear from a series of guest speakers who represent a wide spectrum of leadership roles in our community.

During the spring semester, students demonstrate leadership development through the completion of a practicum within a professional context in the community.  Completion of the practicum includes a written reflection and oral presentation on the experience.

We believe that all students can cultivate a leadership mindset, develop leadership skills, and be leaders. Leadership development fosters universal, transferable skills that will benefit students in the long run.

Beginning with sophomores this Fall, students will develop their leadership in the first year of a focused, three-year program. Sophomores will take Leadership I: Self-Mastery, designed to develop the skills, habits, and thought processes to enable them to succeed as independent agents. Leadership II: Positive Impact will be their junior year focus, which reinforces the competencies of personal mastery while working more explicitly on developing leadership capabilities. Finally, as seniors, students will enroll in Leadership III: Leadership in Action, when they will exhibit leadership responsibilities at school and use seminar time to reflect on and improve their performance.

JPII President Chris Keavy will coordinate the program and engage community leaders and faculty members in the program’s seminar workshops and cohort activities.

Additionally, for those students interested in further exploration of leadership theory and performance, the popular and successful elective course Leadership Studies and Leadership Practicum is open to senior students.  The course is taught by the Director of Leadership Studies and “co-taught” by community leaders who contribute to class lectures.
