A Message From the Nurse’s Office
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is reporting a significant increase in the number of influenza type illnesses and in the severity of the symptoms. Those at greatest risk of complications are people with compromised immune systems, chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart conditions, children under the age of 2 and adults over 65. Please see this link for more information on reported flu cases https://www.mass.gov/info-details/influenza-reporting.
Here are a few reminders to help with the spreading of germs in school:
- Keep your child home from school if they are experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches, cough, tiredness, chills, vomiting, and diarrhea.
- Before returning to school, please make sure that symptoms are greatly improved, there has been no fever for at least 24 hours without the use of Tylenol or Ibuprofen, there has been no vomiting or diarrhea for at least 24 hours, and that the student can get through the school day without the need for medication.
- Please do not medicate your child before sending them to school if they have cold/flu-like symptoms. If they require medication to get through the day, they should stay home.
- Review with students the importance of washing hands with soap and water before and after eating, after blowing their nose, etc.
- Review with students the importance of covering coughs and sneezes and avoiding touching the face.
If your child will be absent from school due to illness, please call or email the school nurse to let them know so that they can keep track of any trends in classrooms.
Please see the attached document with further information on when to keep students home.
