St. John Paul II boys tennis coach Joe Gaudet first saw Cooper Tomchik play as an eighth-grader at Cape Cod Academy. Tomchik was a second-year varsity doubles player at the time, but when he and many of his classmates opted to leave CCA after eighth grade, he made his way to SJP II.

Tomchik switched to singles and immediately established himself as the Lions’ top singles player. The two-year senior captain and three-time Cape & Islands League Most Valuable Player picked up his first win of the year Wednesday against Monomoy.

The Lions won the season opener, 3-2, and Tomchik aims to lead the team to a fourth straight C&I title and another trip to the postseason.
