Performance
At the Preparatory Division, we emphasize participation in the performing arts, because we want our students to become the creative persons that God made them to be! Being made “in the image and likeness of God” means that we need to foster the creative spirit that God gives to us.
All students perform twice per year at our Christmas and Spring Concert.
Core Expressions
Band is open to all students who play a band instrument and study with an outside teacher (this study with an outside teacher is mandatory, as is providing an instrument).
Band instruments include traditional wind (flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn, euphonium, tuba, etc.) or percussion instruments.
This is open to all students with no previous experience is necessary. A variety of music, including sacred music from our Catholic heritage, some secular music will be covered, as well as a review of how to read music. With weekly practice, most students will discover that they can sing, and enjoy it!
A variety of dance styles will be explored during this weekly dance class. Previous dance experience is welcome, but not required. Students will need appropriate dance shoes and attire, which will be explained at or before the start of classes. Enrollment in dance is limited.
To participate in this string ensemble, which incorporates selections from the Suzuki books, other string music, as well as string orchestra selections, students must take private lessons from Mrs. Loewen or another qualified Suzuki string teacher.
Students must provide their own instrument (rental is available).
Activities & Opportunities
Private lessons are offered on string instruments, piano and select band instruments. Participation in strings at SFXP is required for private lessons.
Select chorus (1-2 Days out of the 7 day X block rotation, after lunch is eaten). This is an auditioned choral ensemble.
- All Preparatory Division students may audition for this advanced ensemble.
- The ability to match pitch correctly is required.
- This group will perform more regularly than the other ensembles and will have additional opportunities to sing with other choirs, sing at Mass, and perform for special events, such as graduation.
- An audition form will be made available in late August.
Solo night is a wonderful opportunity to prepare and perform a special selection in the area of expertise of each student. Solo night is not a “talent show,” but is instead a performance opportunity for those who have prepared diligently with a teacher in advance.
The fall play and spring musical is a chance to shine on stage! Our students (Grades 5-12) work together, along with high school mentors and faculty instructors to produce some of the finest shows from the Broadway tradition. Our students perform with live musicians (never “canned” or karaoke for us!) so that they truly learn how to perform in a musical, like the pros!
