In windy conditions on the perfectly manicured Miacomet Golf Course layout, Sturgis West captured the Cape & Islands Golf Classic on Sunday for the first time in the 21-year history of the event.
As for the individual honor, St. John Paul II’s Kristina Thimme was the lone golfer to break 80, shooting a 78 over the 6,024-yard layout. Thimme and the three other female competitors in the event played the same tees as the boys.
Finishing second was Sturgis West’s Nick Harold with an 80 followed by Monomoy’s Christian Pavlakis at 83. Tied for fourth at 84 were Sturgis West’s Curtis Merritt and Kyle Donahue of Rising Tide Charter School
St. John Paul was disqualified from the team championship competition because the Lions could only field two players, losing one to illness and the other missed the boat.
Despite the disqualification, Thimme put aside the disappointment of not competing for the team title to record her impressive 41-37-78, one of only two players to shoot a lower score on the back nine.
For Sturgis West, the Navigators were led by No. 4 player Nick Harold, who posted the day’s second lowest score, an 80. The rest of the team was made up of Curtis Merritt, Justin Howard and Sam Goldberg.
The Navigators secure the Glen DaSilva Cup,given to the winning team, for one year
Finishing second in the team competition was Monomoy (356), led by Christian Pavlakis, who posted the day’s third best score, an 83. Rounding out the top three teams was Sturgis East (378), which was led by Emily Rodricks, who shot an 89.
