Last season, the St. John Paul II girls lacrosse team ended their most successful season ever in the most disappointing way.
The 14-3 Lions were defeated in the first round of the playoffs to Hanover, 19-11 to add a bit of a sour note to a great campaign.
“Last year we felt we were the better team and we were disappointed we went out early,” said Mike Sullivan, in his third year as SJP head coach. “Hopefully we can get there again this year; these kids have high expectations.”
At this point of the season, the Lions are perfect with an 9-0 record and have a big league match with Falmouth Academy coming up next week.
“The goal for this year is to get into the tournament, and be in a position where we could contend for the Cape and Islands title,” he said.
The squad has already impressed with recent come-from-behind wins over both Nauset and Bishop Stang. And the girls on the team share in the coach’s expectations.
