With an array of topics from velocity to toxicity, 33 projects were entered into the JPII Science and Engineering Fair. Grade 9 Pre-AP Biologists participated as part of the course curriculum, while upperclassmen joined as an extracurricular. The science and engineering fair aims to give students first-hand experience with experimental design, peer review, and independent research. Along with the Pre-AP curriculum (CollegeBoard), it motivates students to actively analyze real-world phenomena and collaborate productively with their peers and professionals in dialogue, investigations, and problem-solving.
Congratulations! Top Three Projects
Jillian Boyle ’27: Measuring Water Toxicity with Daphnia Magna
Ruairi Moore ’27: How do electrolytes affect humans’ reaction speed and recovery time?
Autumn Ozolins ’27: Natural Antibiotics: The Antidote to Microbial Resistance
We want to sincerely thank the judges who participated in our event. In total, twenty-three judges from various STEM professions engaged with the participants professionally. Judges included alumni Julia Keras ’16, who works as a Software Engineer; Ashlinn Hoffmeister ’19, a Nurse at BID Plymouth; and Victoria Butler ’19, a Certified Nursing Assistant at BID Plymouth. We also had judges from multiple local organizations, including the Association to Preserve Cape Cod, Barnstable Land Trust, Associates of Cape Cod, Inc., the Center for Coastal Studies, and Barnstable and Yarmouth DPW. We thank them all for their valuable time and contribution to our event.
The top projects from our local fair are eligible to participate at the Southeast Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Bridgewater State University. There, students will meet other high school science fair participants from across the region and have the opportunity to be judged by STEM professionals from all over the state. Students who place at the regional level may qualify to attend the MA State Science and Engineering Fair at Gillette Stadium in April.
